Exciting Expansion: 4 Dynamic BJP MLAs Join Himanta Sarma’s Council, Boosting Ministerial Strength to 19!
Guwahati, Dec 7 (PTI) – Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expanded his cabinet on Saturday by swearing in four BJP MLAs as ministers, bolstering his administration’s capacity to address the development needs of Assam. Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office to Prasanta Phookan, Kaushik Rai, Krishnendu Paul, and Rupesh Goala at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra, with Sarma and his cabinet in attendance.
Expressing optimism about working towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a developed Assam, Sarma tweeted congratulations to his new cabinet colleagues. This latest expansion brings his council of ministers to 19 members.
Sarma emphasized that the addition of these ministers reflects the government’s commitment to effective governance. “We now have more hands to dedicate ourselves to Assam’s development,” he stated, noting the opportunity to appoint guardian ministers for all districts and better serve the public.
The new ministers include veterans and newcomers. Phookan, a four-time MLA from Dibrugarh, and Goala from Doom Dooma, both represent Upper Assam’s tea districts. Paul, now a minister for the first time, is a two-time legislator from Sribhumi (Karimganj), while Rai hails from Cachar in the Barak Valley.
In a significant reshuffle, Tea Welfare and Labour Minister Sanjay Kishan resigned, creating space for Goala, and was appointed as Chairman of Assam Food and Civil Supplies. Earlier, Parimal Suklabaidya vacated his cabinet post after being elected to the Lok Sabha.
While portfolios for the new ministers are yet to be assigned, the expansion underlines Sarma’s strategic leadership of the NDA alliance, which holds a majority in the 126-member state assembly. Previously, Sarma expanded his ministry in June 2022, after first establishing his government with 14 ministers in May 2021.
