Furious Backlash: Meghalaya BJP MLA Sanbor Shullai Slams Assam’s Controversial Beef Ban | Northeast News
Meghalaya BJP leader and MLA Sanbor Shullai has openly criticized the Assam government’s recent ban on consuming beef in public places, labeling it as an infringement on personal choice and constitutional rights. Shullai, voicing his discontent with the decision made by Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, argued that the Indian Constitution does not restrict beef consumption, and personal dietary choices vary widely worldwide.
In a strongly-worded statement, Shullai expressed his determination to bring the issue to the BJP central leadership’s attention, asserting that in Meghalaya, residents maintain the freedom to eat as they wish. He recounted personal experiences, emphasizing his opposition to any attempts to impose similar restrictions in Meghalaya.
Shullai also articulated his concerns through a letter addressed to the central BJP leadership and Assam’s Chief Minister, underscoring his disappointment with the Assam government’s measures. He stressed that while it is valid to control criminal activities, dictating personal eating habits is unwarranted.
The Assam government’s decision, announced on December 4, seeks to amend the Assam Cattle Preservation Act of 2021, expanding restrictions on beef consumption in restaurants, hotels, and public places. This move has added new provisions to existing bans on cattle slaughter and beef sales near areas with Hindu, Jain, or Sikh majority or within a 5 km radius of temples or satras.
The decision in Assam follows a heated controversy in Meghalaya, involving right-wing organizations advocating for a beef ban in the Christian-majority state. In response, the Meghalaya government denied landing permission to Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwarananda Saraswati Maharaj, who symbolically carried out his mission from an overhead flight.
Shullai’s staunch opposition highlights the ongoing debates concerning cultural practices, personal freedoms, and political ideologies in the region, drawing attention to the delicate balance between food choices and religious sensitivities.
