Shocking Betrayal: NPP’s Move Devastates District Council Autonomy – Claims Congress
SHILLONG, Dec 6: The Opposition Congress launched a scathing critique of the National People’s Party (NPP) on Friday, accusing it of undermining the autonomy of Meghalaya’s district councils. This attack came in response to comments made by NPP’s Ampareen Lyngdoh, which the Congress interpreted as an affront to the independent nature of the councils.
Ronnie V Lyngdoh, the Opposition Chief Whip and the sole Congress MLA, expressed his concern, stating that Ampareen’s remarks posed a challenge to the concept of autonomy within the councils. Ampareen had asserted that the NPP should not be underestimated because any party looking to form an executive council within the autonomous district cannot succeed without NPP’s backing. She further suggested that without NPP’s support, managing the council would be nearly impossible.
The Congress MLA rebutted these claims by highlighting that if district councils relied on the state government for financial sustainability, they could no longer be considered autonomous. He emphasized that district councils are entitled to resources from the state government, sourced from cess on minerals and transportation taxes collected by the state. This, he argued, represented the councils’ rightful share and dues rather than reliance on state government patronage.
The assertions by the Congress have sparked a broader conversation regarding the relationship between state authority and district council autonomy, central to Meghalaya’s complex political landscape. The discord highlights ongoing tensions about governance and financial independence at district levels, questioning the balance of power between state entities and autonomous administrative bodies in Meghalaya. The debate continues to unfold, with stakeholders eagerly watching its impact on regional politics and governance dynamics.
