Thrilling Triumph at Hornbill International Naga Wrestling: Venuzo Dawhuo Victorious & Historic Women’s Exhibition Debut
The 17th Hornbill International Naga Wrestling Championship 2024 took place in Chiechama, Kohima, on December 6th. The event featured Jigme Thinlye Namgyal, Consul General of the Royal Bhutanese Consulate General in Guwahati, as the special guest. In his opening remarks, Namgyal expressed gratitude to the State Government for their invitation and described the festival as a unique opportunity to experience the rich diversity of the 18 Naga tribes, notably their distinctive attire and vibrant music culture. He also noted the cultural significance of wrestling, a sport cherished in Bhutan as well.
Namgyal extended an invitation to the people of Nagaland to attend Bhutan’s Rhododendron Week in the coming spring, promising it would provide a chance to explore the indigenous culture and untouched nature of some of Bhutan’s most exotic communities.
In the wrestling competition, Venuzo Dawhuo emerged victorious, securing the first place in the men’s category. In specific weight classes, Seyiejalie Gwirie won the category for 90 kg and below, while Keneiselie Khawakhrie triumphed in the 75 kg and below category. Notably, for the first time, the championship featured exhibition matches for women in two weight categories: 65 kg and below, and 65 kg and above.
The championship is part of the larger Hornbill Festival, which continues to draw large crowds, having already attracted over 86,000 visitors in its first five days. The festival highlights the cultural richness and diversity of the Naga people and serves as a cultural confluence for indigenous and international visitors alike.
