Shocking Arrest: Man Caught with Illegal 1.3kg Rhino Horn in Assam | Must-Read Guwahati News
In Dibrugarh’s Lakhimpur district, authorities detained Neela Gogoi after seizing a 1.3 kg rhinoceros horn from his residence in the Dholpur area. The operation was led by Narayanpur OC Nipon Gogoi, who acted on credible intelligence suggesting illegal wildlife trade in the vicinity. The seized horn and Neela were handed over to the forest department, and he faces charges under the Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972, which prohibits poaching and trafficking of rhino-derived products.
During interrogation, Neela claimed that on December 3, three unidentified men approached him with an offer to sell the horn for Rs 5 lakh. Lacking the funds, Neela said they instructed him to keep the horn and locate a buyer, promising a commission in return. The men pledged to return in a week to evaluate progress.
Authorities are currently investigating to uncover the identities of those involved in this illegal transaction. This incident highlights the ongoing efforts to curb illegal wildlife trade and enforce wildlife protection laws.
In related news, two men in Pune, identified as Hemrao Mehta and Hrithik Lekurwale, were arrested for attempting to sell whale ambergris and blackbuck horns, worth Rs 1 lakh. Acting on a tip-off, forest officials conducted an undercover operation, which successfully led to the suspects’ arrest.
Meanwhile, in Lucknow, a Times of India investigation discovered alarming noise pollution levels outside hospitals, exceeding standard limits. Readings ranged from 79 to 90 decibels, far above the recommended maximum of 50 dB. Experts caution that such noise disrupts patient recovery and increases stress, prompting calls for stricter enforcement of rules and public awareness campaigns to reduce honking and foster calmer environments.
