Urgent Appeal: Muhammad Yunus Enlists Religious Leaders to Combat Disturbing Attacks on Minorities in Bangladesh
Bangladesh’s interim government leader, Muhammad Yunus, called on religious leaders for help in verifying reports of attacks on minorities, particularly Hindus, and ensuring justice for victims. Speaking at a multi-faith meeting, Yunus highlighted the discrepancy between domestic realities and foreign media reports, which some in his cabinet have accused of being misleading, especially concerning the Hindu community’s persecution.
Yunus convened the meeting with leaders from the Muslim, Hindu, Christian, and Buddhist communities to seek their cooperation in gathering accurate information. He emphasized the necessity of bypassing potentially biased official accounts that aim to please superiors rather than revealing the truth. Yunus underlined that all Bangladeshis have equal rights, and the state must uphold these rights by taking prompt action against any attacks on minorities.
To prevent and respond to such incidents effectively, Yunus advocated for the development of mechanisms that swiftly collect reliable information and hold perpetrators accountable. He stressed the importance of fostering an environment of national unity, assured that most Bangladeshis shared his vision, and asserted that differences in faith and opinion do not make them adversaries.
Following the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August, there have been reports of over 200 attacks on the Hindu community across 50 districts. Yunus, who took office under these tense conditions, has pushed for unity, describing Bangladesh as a “one family” nation. He noted the recent celebration of Durga Puja at the Dhakeswari Temple, which saw participation from various faiths, illustrating the potential for national harmony.
Yunus’s appeal seeks to address minority repression, offer relief to victims, and promote a cohesive societal framework amid ongoing tensions.
