Breaking News: Guwahati Police Triumphantly Recovers Rs 90,837 in Shocking Digital Scam Bust!
In a significant breakthrough, the Cyber Police Station (Cyber PS) in Guwahati successfully recovered and returned Rs 90,837 to a victim of a sophisticated “digital arrest” scam. The victim had earlier fallen prey to this elaborate fraud, losing a staggering Rs 48,40,844.
The “digital arrest” scam involves cybercriminals masquerading as law enforcement officials to convince victims they face serious legal charges, thereby coercing them into paying money under the guise of resolving these fictitious issues. By exploiting fear, the fraudsters maintain pressure on victims, who are forced to remain online until the scammers’ demands are met.
In a related development, Punjab Police arrested two individuals from Assam, Najrul Ali and Midul Ali, for their alleged involvement in similar “digital fraud” cases. The arrests were part of ongoing efforts to crack down on such scams.
The schemes came to light when a 76-year-old retired government official reported being defrauded of Rs 76 lakh. The victim was deceived by scammers claiming to be from the Mumbai Cyber Crime, who alleged his involvement in money laundering and fabricated a story about a subpoena from the Bombay High Court, communicated via a WhatsApp call.
The Cyber PS in Guwahati has been at the forefront of countering online scams, employing advanced tracking tools and collaborating with banking networks to intercept illicit financial transactions. Efforts are actively underway to trace and recover the remaining funds, with officials optimistic about their chances of reclaiming more of the victims’ lost money in the coming days.
These instances highlight the ongoing challenges and dangers of cybercrime, emphasizing the importance of vigilance and the continuous efforts by law enforcement agencies to protect individuals from such sophisticated scams.
