VHP Protesters Storm Bangladesh High Commission in Tripura: Flag Pulled Down in Bold Show of Dissent

A tense situation emerged in Agartala on Monday as hundreds of protesters, primarily from right-wing groups such as the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), demonstrated at the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission office in Tripura. The protest aimed to condemn the attacks on minority Hindus in Bangladesh. Starting from the Circuit House area, demonstrators marched towards the High Commission’s office, overcoming security at the main entrance.

Reports indicate that approximately 100 protesters breached the compound, pulling down the Bangladesh national flag while voicing loud slogans. A senior police official, who chose to remain anonymous, confirmed the flag removal but clarified that no vandalism or scuffles occurred inside. “The police swiftly removed the protesters before any major damage,” the official noted, adding that there were no reports of harm to any office personnel.

The protest was catalyzed by recent reports of violence against Hindus in Bangladesh, including attacks on temples and businesses owned by this minority community. One protester expressed concern, stating, “Muslim minorities in India coexist peacefully, but in Bangladesh, conditions are drastically different. Advocates for Hindu rights face imprisonment, and Hindu properties are under attack. This must stop immediately.”

A VHP leader emphasized the organization’s demand for the Indian government to intervene, urging action to ensure the safety of minorities in Bangladesh and to restore regional peace. The incident at the Assistant High Commission has sparked a broader debate on the treatment of religious minorities in South Asia, prompting authorities to keep a close watch on developments.

The situation reflects ongoing tensions between the two neighboring countries regarding the treatment of minority communities, with calls for diplomatic engagement to address and resolve these concerns.
