Mizoram’s Triumphant Breakthrough: Celebrating Two Days Without Pig Deaths During ASF Crisis
Aizawl, Mizoram: For the second day in a row, no pig deaths or culling were reported in Mizoram due to the African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak, according to state animal husbandry and veterinary officials. The last recorded pig casualties were reported on November 29, with ten pigs dying, including seven in Lungdai village in Kolasib district, near the Assam border. It marks six days without any new pig fatalities and five days with no culling activities. To date, the ASF outbreak has led to the culling of 24,059 pigs in the state. The initial ASF case in Mizoram was recorded in Lungsen village, neighboring Bangladesh, in the Lunglei district on March 21, 2021. Since then, the disease has persisted in the region.
The ASF has significantly impacted the state’s pig population, necessitating continuous monitoring and response efforts by the veterinary department. The temporary cessation of pig deaths and culling offers a brief respite for the local industry, though vigilance remains crucial to prevent further outbreaks.
