Breaking Ground: Himanta Biswa Sarma Sends Delegations to Resolve Key Issues in Jharkhand
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has taken a dig at his Jharkhand counterpart, Hemant Soren, by announcing plans to send two delegations to study unspecified issues in Jharkhand. This move came after Soren expressed intentions to dispatch an all-party group to investigate the condition of tea tribes in Assam, a matter he had previously highlighted.
Sarma, following a BJP meeting, stated, “In our cabinet on December 5, we will make some decisions regarding visiting some Jharkhand areas. We will also go and see two-three things there.” The context for Sarma’s comments lies in the aftermath of JMM leader Soren’s swearing-in as Jharkhand’s Chief Minister on November 28, when he promptly sanctioned an all-party committee aimed at studying the “marginalised” tea tribes in Assam.
The back-and-forth between the two leaders stems from ongoing electoral tensions. During the recent poll campaign, Sarma spotlighted the “predicament” of Jharkhand’s tribal communities, allegedly due to large-scale infiltration from Bangladesh. In contrast, Soren’s latest move is seen as a robust response to this charge, as the tea tribes in Assam, classified as Other Backward Classes despite their demands for Scheduled Tribe status, have long been marginalized.
Historically, Soren has been vocal about the mistreatment of tea tribes originally from Jharkhand and their significant economic contributions. On September 25, he wrote to Sarma, advocating for their recognition as Scheduled Tribes and urging the original inhabitants of Jharkhand in Assam to come back.
The political landscape saw a shift when the JMM-led coalition retained power in the Jharkhand assembly by securing 56 out of 81 seats, while the BJP-led NDA managed only 24. This dynamic highlights the ongoing political contest as both leaders continue to navigate complex inter-state issues.
