Thrilling Race Ahead: Indian Racing Gears Up for Five Spectacular Classics in 2024/25
The Indian horse racing season is set to reach its peak, with four of the year’s five prestigious classics lined up around the New Year. The Mahalaxmi Racecourse in Mumbai is preparing for thrilling racing events, promising both high stakes and Grade 1 victories starting in December. The season kicks off on November 24 with the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) organizing 26 race meetings, offering a total prize pool of ₹21 crore.
December will host the 1,000 Guineas and 2,000 Guineas, races reminiscent of their British counterparts. The 1,000 Guineas, scheduled for December 15, attracts the country’s top three-year-old fillies. In 2023, Jendayi claimed victory, with jockey Oisin Murphy in the saddle. Alternatively, fillies have the opportunity to compete in the 2,000 Guineas on December 22, although it’s traditionally a contest for three-year-old colts. In an unexpected twist for 2023, Believe triumphed in an all-colt lineup.
January ushers in the Indian Oaks on January 11, akin to the UK’s Epsom Oaks. Jendayi, the strong 1/9 favorite in 2024, dazzled once again under Murphy’s guidance, following her earlier success in the 1,000 Guineas. The spotlight then shifts to the Indian Derby on February 2, where Jendayi aimed to make history in 2024 but finished fourth, trailing Enabler, victorious for the Narredu family.
The season’s final classic, the Indian St Leger, mirrors the UK version and is held in September at Pune Racecourse, testing stamina over 1 mile 6 furlongs. In 2024, Touch Of Grey emerged victorious, outpacing the favored Jamari. These high-caliber events set the stage for a promising year as a new generation of three-year-olds aspires to etch their names into Mumbai and Pune’s racing folklore.
