Ultimate Sikkim Expedition: Unraveling the Hidden Threats of High-Risk Glacial Areas
The Sikkim government has embarked on its final glacial lake expedition of the year, targeting high-risk areas in the region’s elevated terrains. As the fourth initiative in a series, this expedition aims to formulate effective strategies to mitigate glacial flood risks exacerbated by climate change.
The team is evaluating two potential mitigation efforts: reducing water levels at Shako Chho Lake and establishing a retention structure at Dolma Sampa. Scheduled between November 27 and December 5, the expedition will conduct crucial studies including lake discharge analysis, subsurface geophysical surveys, topographical mapping, debris deposition examination, and flood level assessments.
Previous expeditions have comprehensively assessed various at-risk lakes, resulting in the installation of automatic weather and water level monitoring stations at Shako Chho and South Lhonak Lake. These stations, supported by the Swiss Development Corporation, supply daily weather and water level data and feature alert systems for sudden water level changes, proving instrumental for informed decision-making.
The detailed studies underway are poised to refine glacial flood modeling and enhance the design of retention structures. Scientists and engineers from several departments, including the Science and Technology Department, the Mines and Geology Department, and the National Disaster Management Authority, are part of the expedition. Additionally, the team is supported by the United Nations Development Programme, the Indian Army, and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police.
Facing challenges posed by the high altitude of 17,000 feet and sub-zero temperatures, the team has already arrived at Thangu, following a ceremonial blessing at the Lachen Monastery with the Lachen Dzumsa community.
Through these expeditions, the Sikkim government demonstrates a proactive approach in addressing glacial hazards, emphasizing the protection of local communities and ecosystems. This initiative highlights Sikkim’s commitment to developing adaptive strategies to combat climate-induced challenges in the region.
