Bold BJP Ambitions: Targeting Six Key Muslim-Majority Seats in Assam’s 2026 Assembly Battle
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, after successfully securing the Samaguri seat in the recent assembly bypolls, has set an ambitious goal for the BJP: to contest and win up to six Muslim-majority constituencies in the upcoming 2026 assembly elections. Historically, the BJP has not aggressively campaigned in these minority-dominated regions, resulting in a lower vote bank. However, Sarma believes that a focused campaign could secure victories in areas like Rupohi, Lahorighat, Goalapara East, and both South and North Karimganj.
Despite significant minority presence, BJP received between 30,000 to 40,000 votes in each minority seat during the last Lok Sabha elections. Sarma attributes this vote share to successful state government programs like the ‘Orunodoi’ and ‘Nijut Moina’ schemes, which provide financial assistance to women and economically weaker students, benefiting communities across both majority and minority demographics. The initiatives aim to bolster support by offering Rs 10,000 to each woman associated with Self-Help Groups (SHGs), a network that includes seven lakh minority women.
While the BJP is intent on expanding its reach in these regions, Sarma clarified that the party will focus on development rather than “politics of appeasement.” Goals include equitably distributing healthcare infrastructure like hospitals and ambulances, ensuring fairness across societal lines. The party emphasizes that delivery of beneficiary schemes has been inclusive, covering majority and minority areas equally. This strategic and inclusive development approach is seen as a platform for expanding BJP’s influence in the upcoming elections, as indicated by Sarma’s recent political engagements and planning.
The recent bypoll success in Samaguri, a traditionally Congress stronghold for 24 years, serves as a motivating factor for the BJP, enhancing their determination to intensify efforts in minority areas for a broader electoral gain in the future.
