Manipur Strikes Back: Defiant Rejection of Mizo National Front’s Bold Demand for CM Biren Singh’s Resignation
The Government of Manipur has issued a strong rebuttal to the Mizo National Front’s (MNF) recent call for Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s resignation. In a press release, the Manipur government condemned the MNF’s demand, asserting its firm opposition to external meddling in the state’s internal affairs. The statement criticized the MNF for its historical role in sowing discord and labeled it as an anti-national entity, highlighting its past secessionist activities in the Mizo district of Assam.
The release reiterated Manipur’s commitment to curbing illegal immigration and drug trafficking by supporting the construction of fences along its border with Myanmar. It blamed Myanmar for being the source of these challenges and linked current turmoil in Manipur to illegal immigrants from Myanmar. These immigrants are said to have suffered economically due to the state’s crackdown on illicit poppy cultivation under the “War on Drugs” initiative led by CM Biren Singh.
The Manipur government dismissed claims that recent crises were driven by religious policies, accusing the MNF of spreading false narratives. Attention was drawn to an unusual growth in villages in Kuki-dominated areas, contrasting with minimal changes in Naga regions. Additionally, the release recalled concerns raised by the Mizoram government about unauthorized land acquisitions by Myanmar nationals.
Commending CM Biren Singh, the Manipur government emphasized his administration’s efforts to restore peace, including providing aid to refugees and recovering stolen weapons. This response comes after the MNF, represented by VL. Krosehnehzova, accused CM Singh of failing to alleviate the ethnic conflict and demanded his resignation. The MNF criticized his leadership for exacerbating the crisis and urged prompt intervention from the central government to restore democratic rights and dignity to Manipur’s residents.
