Urgent Call for Change: MNF Demands Manipur CM’s Resignation Amidst Ethnic Strife Chaos
The Mizo National Front (MNF), an ally of the BJP, has called for the resignation of Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, criticizing his handling of the prolonged ethnic crisis. MNF General Secretary V.L. Krosehnehzova condemned Singh for his alleged inaction, which he claims has exacerbated the suffering among the Zo tribal communities. The crisis, ongoing for over 18 months, has led to significant loss of life and property in Manipur, with 219 deaths, 360 churches destroyed, and over 41,425 individuals displaced internally, according to the MNF.
The MNF has expressed dissatisfaction with the Central government’s response and insists on urgent interventions to restore democratic rights and dignity to the affected communities. Leadership under Chief Minister Singh is described by the MNF as failing to address the escalating violence and humanitarian crisis, which has also seen widespread burning of homes and villages. The MNF stresses the necessity for justice and restoration amidst these atrocities.
Highlighting a contrast, the MNF praised former Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga for offering substantial support to displaced persons from Manipur, Myanmar, and Bangladesh during the crisis. The party has been actively involved in assisting the Zofate brethren by providing food, shelter, and education in Mizoram, and is urging the Zo tribal community to unite in the face of adversity.
Commendations were offered to Mizoram Rajya Sabha Member K. Vanlalvena and various local groups, including churches and student unions, for their contributions in aiding displaced peoples. These efforts are celebrated as embodying the spirit and solidarity of the Zofate community.
Approximately 7,800 refugees from the Kuki-Zo-Hmar community have sought refuge in Mizoram following the outbreak of violence in May of the previous year. These refugees maintain cultural and ethnic ties with Mizoram’s Mizos, illustrating the broader regional impact of the conflict.
