Dibrugarh Residents Desperately Urge CM to Save Beloved Iconic Tea Garden from Destruction | Guwahati News
Residents of Dibrugarh have appealed to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, voicing significant concern over the commercial destruction of the town’s valued green spaces, especially along Convoy Road. The environmental group “Sustainable Green Dibrugarh” highlights the alarming clearing of tea plants and trees in the South Jalannagar Tea Estate for developmental purposes. This area, a crucial green belt within Dibrugarh East and West Revenue Circles, is one of the last verdant spaces left in the city, which prides itself as India’s “tea city.” Activists warn that the loss not only threatens the city’s identity but also poses risks to local air quality and biodiversity. In related events, two leopards causing disturbances in tea estates in Dibrugarh and Tinsukia have been captured. The male leopard from Dibrugarh’s Greenwood Tea Estate and the other from Lankashi Tea Estate will be examined before being released into the wild. The situation underscores the ongoing conflict between developmental ambitions and environmental conservation in the region.
