Passion and Perseverance: Idol Maker Valsan Kunhimangalam’s Inspiring Mission to Revive the Ancient Lost-Wax Technique
Nestled discreetly in the residential area near Ezhimala railway station in Kunhimangalam, Kannur, around 11 dedicated artisans practice the ancient craft of idol making using the lost wax technique, a tradition tracing back to the Indus Valley Civilization. Central to this craft resurgence is P Valsan, known as Valsan Kunhimangalam, a former computer science lecturer who returned to his ancestral craft despite familial skepticism. In response to a decline in artisans, Valsan helped form a bronze heritage trust, securing support from the government to preserve this indigenous art. In 2018, Kunhimangalam was recognized as a heritage village, and artisans established the Kunhimangalam Bell Metal Heritage Private Ltd. with government grants, enabling the creation of a dedicated facility equipped with modern safety machinery.
Valsan’s work has drawn significant attention, notably when a bronze lamp he sculpted was offered to the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. The village produces diverse metal creations, including religious idols and ornaments used in regional rituals like Theyyam. Valsan highlights the universal appeal of their work, attracting orders for items like church bells and mosque minarets, and drawing international attention with tourists and researchers visiting from around the globe.
Despite recognition and awards, challenges persist in attracting new practitioners due to the craft’s labor-intensive nature and inconsistent income. Valsan is pursuing a Geographical Indication status to further enhance the craft’s prestige and incentive for new artisans. His own children have shown interest, observing and learning alongside him in the workshop, offering hope for future generations to sustain this unique cultural heritage.
