Musk, in a recent series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), highlighted findings from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which noted that in the financial year 2023, the U.S. government spent $6.16 trillion while garnering only $4.47 trillion in revenue, resulting in a dire budget deficit.
Musk’s posts reflected the sentiment of the DOGE, which stressed the critical need to address this budgetary imbalance, pointing out that the last time the U.S. saw a budget surplus was in 2001. DOGE stated that reversing this trend is essential, as the country must work toward a balanced budget. According to their insights, the government’s revenue streams include sources like income taxes, corporate taxes, and customs duties, while expenditures primarily cover social security, national defense, and Medicare.
In a follow-up post on November 24, DOGE scrutinized government spending, highlighting allocations such as $28 million for a licensing fee for Afghan army uniform patterns, $2.5 million for a Census ad during the Super Bowl, $1.7 million for holograms of deceased comedians, and $500,000 to construct an IHOP in Washington, D.C.
DOGE is characterized as a transparency-focused advisory body, reportedly established by President-elect Donald Trump’s administration and Musk, aimed at providing Americans with governmental fiscal insights. The department is led by Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, an entrepreneur, and one-time Republican presidential hopeful. X, the Musk-owned platform, has granted the department official government credentials, as per prior media reports.
