Shocking Scandal: CEO Among Five Arrested in Tragic PMJAY Beneficiary Deaths at Ahmedabad’s Khyati Hospital
The Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) of Ahmedabad City police apprehended five additional individuals in the Khyati Hospital-PMJAY case on Tuesday. In this incident, two beneficiaries of the government health scheme died following allegedly unnecessary angioplasty procedures earlier in November. The latest arrests include Chirag Rajput, the hospital’s Director, CEO Rahul Jain, and three marketing team members: Milind Patel, Pratik Bhatt, and Pankil Patel. Notably, Rajput, who faced the media post the fatalities, became a fugitive after an FIR was filed on November 13.
These arrests raise the total count in the case to six, following the earlier detention of visiting cardiologist Dr. Prashant Vazirani, who was placed in judicial custody on Monday. Jain was captured in Udaipur, Rajasthan, whereas the other four were located at a farmhouse in Kapadvanj, Kheda district, linked to a friend of Rajput.
Despite this advancement, three directors of Ahmedabad Bariatrics and Cosmetics Pvt. Ltd.—Chairman Kartik Jasu Patel (currently abroad), Rajshree Pradeep Kothari, and Dr. Sanjay Mulji Patolia—remain untraceable but are named in the FIR alongside Rajput. Joint Commissioner of Police, Crime, Sharad Singhal stated that the marketing team engaged in community medical camps, persuading village residents to undergo surgeries at Khyati Hospital, with alleged commissions as incentives.
The hospital amassed approximately Rs 11 crore over the past 18 months, with 70% obtained through the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY). Two residents of Borisana village in Kadi, Mehsana district, succumbed on November 11 post-angioplasty at the hospital. Singhal mentioned that the suspects evaded capture using Chinese and Russian apps for communication, devoid of SIM cards, relying solely on dongles and WiFi. With cyber crime team’s aid, they were eventually traced and apprehended.
