Shocking NCCR Study Reveals Nearly 50% of DK’s Pristine Shoreline Eroded!
The residential area of Batapady near Mangaluru faces increasing threats from sea erosion, dramatically impacting the community. According to a National Centre for Coastal Research (NCCR) study covering 1990-2018, Dakshina Kannada district experiences the most significant erosion among Karnataka’s coastal regions, with nearly 50% of its 36.66 km shoreline affected. Comparatively, Udupi saw a 34.7% erosion rate, while Uttara Kannada had the least at 12.3%.
Responding to an inquiry by Capt. Brijesh Chowta, MP, in the Lok Sabha, Kirti Vardhan Singh, Union Minister of State for Environment, noted that approximately 50% of Karnataka’s coast remains stable, with 26% accreting and 24% eroding. Nationally, 33.6% of the Indian coastline is eroding, as per the NCCR data. The minister attributed coastal erosion to rising sea levels and highlighted the Karnataka government’s efforts to address these challenges through the Shoreline Management Plan and the K-SHORE Project with World Bank support, aiming to bolster coastal infrastructure resilience and tackle marine plastic pollution.
Additionally, the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information and Services (INCOIS) has developed Multi-Hazard Vulnerability Maps, which use various data sources to predict areas at risk of flooding due to tsunamis and storm surges. These maps provide crucial insights into the potential impact of oceanogenic disasters over a century. Published on November 27, 2024, this report underscores the urgent need for proactive measures in coastal conservation and resilience.
