Urgent Call for Action: Mizoram MP Demands President’s Rule to End Manipur’s Ethnic Crisis | Guwahati Breaking News
Aizawl: K Vanlalvena, the sole Rajya Sabha MP from Mizoram, has urged for the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur, suggesting it would allow the central government to directly address the ongoing violence in the region. Speaking at a parliamentary leaders meeting in Delhi, ahead of the winter parliamentary session, Vanlalvena pointed out the severe ethnic clashes that have led to numerous civilian casualties since May of the previous year. He emphasized the urgency of central intervention to halt the violence, arguing that the situation in Manipur is critical.
Despite being from Mizoram, Vanlalvena underlined the importance of the Manipur issue to his constituency, noting the historical presence and significant population of over six lakh Mizos living in Manipur. Many of these are from various subtribes who have resided in the region long before British colonial times. Furthermore, the unrest has driven tens of thousands of refugees from neighboring countries such as Myanmar and Bangladesh into Mizoram, including many children who need special care.
Vanlalvena highlighted the inadequacy of resources to support these vulnerable groups, noting the inability of Unicef offices in Guwahati and Shillong to assist the refugee children in Mizoram. To address this, he called on the central government to establish a Unicef office in Mizoram, stressing that this initiative is crucial to meet the current humanitarian needs.
This call for action underscores the MP’s advocacy for government intervention to restore peace and provide much-needed support for those affected by the regional conflicts in and around Mizoram. Vanlalvena’s persistent focus on Manipur reflects both a concern for human rights and a commitment to addressing the broader socio-political dynamics affecting the northeastern states of India.
