Sensational Uproar in Sambhal: Samajwadi MP Amongst Those Booked Amid Chaos and Prohibitory Orders
Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, Nov 25: The city of Sambhal stood desolate on Monday following deadly riots the previous day, prompting the administration to enforce prohibitory orders. Police have charged Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Zia Ur Rehman Barq, Nawab Suhail Iqbal—the son of an SP legislator—and 400 others in connection with the violence. The city witnessed a shutdown of internet services, closed schools, and flag marches by security forces.
The unrest transpired during protests against a court-ordered survey of the Mughal-era Shahi Jama Masjid. Demonstrators, opposing claims that the mosque was constructed over a Hindu temple in 1529, engaged in rioting, resulting in four deaths and injuries to dozens, including 22 police officers. Police responded with tear gas and cane charges, while vehicles were set ablaze.
Authorities detained 25 individuals, including two women, under the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act and the National Security Act. Entry into the district is restricted until December 1. Weapons have been confiscated from arrested individuals, and police are utilizing CCTV footage to identify further suspects.
In New Delhi, Union Minister Giriraj Singh accused local politicians of instigating the conflict, calling for murder charges against the involved opposition MLAs. MP Jagdambika Pal urged stringent action against those accountable. Meanwhile, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticized the BJP government in UP, alleging it is fueling Hindu-Muslim divides. He urged the Supreme Court’s intervention to uphold unity and constitutional values.
Sambhal’s Superintendent of Police, Krishan Kumar, reiterates that Section 144 is in effect, warning of severe consequences for lawbreakers. The situation remains tense as investigations continue to ensure stability and justice.
