Breaking News: Central Probe Team’s Crucial Visit to NEHU Meghalaya Sparks Anticipation!
A two-member fact-finding team from the Ministry of Education arrived at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) on Sunday, November 24, to investigate allegations of irregularities against Vice Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla. The committee consists of former UGC Chairman Prof. DP Singh and former Assam University Vice Chancellor Prof. Dilip Chandra Nath. They are tasked with meeting various student organizations, including NEHUSU and KSU NEHU Unit, on November 25.
After engaging with student bodies, the committee plans to meet other university stakeholders, such as faculty and non-teaching staff, and will conduct spot inspections to evaluate campus infrastructure. The Ministry has instructed the team to conclude its investigation within 15 days from the November 15 order, giving them a narrow timeframe of just two days to compile their findings and submit a report.
Key areas under scrutiny include controversial appointments, infrastructure neglect, declining university rankings, and alleged non-responsiveness by the Vice Chancellor. This investigation is being closely observed by the Meghalaya High Court, which has scheduled a hearing on December 6. The court’s division bench, consisting of Chief Justice IP Mukerji and Justice B Bhattacharjee, will review the committee’s report, its recommendations, and any suggested corrective actions before proceeding further.
The committee’s findings are anticipated to be crucial in addressing ongoing concerns at NEHU. Their conclusions could influence how the university manages its administration and addresses the highlighted issues, making this investigation significant for the institution’s future. As stakeholders eagerly await the report, the outcomes could have broader implications for governance and accountability within academic institutions in the region.
