Celebrating Excellence: Babbu Tamang Triumphantly Wins Prestigious YN Bhandari Best Journalism Award
On National Press Day, the State government honored outstanding journalists for their excellence in journalism and contributions to various societal issues. Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang-Golay presented these accolades during a ceremony organized by the State Information and Public Relations department at Manan Kendra, Gangtok.
The prestigious ‘YN Bhandari Best Journalism Award’ was conferred upon freelance journalist Babbu Tamang. Since beginning his career in 1999, Tamang has been a steadfast advocate for truth, reporting diligently on numerous critical issues and amplifying the voices of marginalized communities.
In recognition of his consistent efforts in environmental journalism, Pankaj Dhungel, Sikkim correspondent for East Mojo and ANI, received the ‘Chief Minister’s Award for Reporting on Climate Change’. His impactful work highlights the significance of climate change and inspires greater public engagement in environmental sustainability.
A spotlight on human rights journalism earned Deepak Gurung, a reporter from Anugamini, the ‘Chief Minister’s Award for Reporting on Human Rights’. Gurung’s investigative reporting has uncovered social injustices and championed the rights of marginalized groups, such as migrant workers and those exploited during the pandemic.
Raymond Lepcha, deputy editor of Summit Times, was recognized with the ‘Chief Minister’s Award for Reporting on Women’s Issues’. His commitment to addressing gender-based discrimination and advocating for women’s rights has played a crucial role in raising awareness and promoting equality.
Additionally, Sushil Rai, a Sikkim Reporter correspondent from Namchi, received the ‘Grameen Patrakarita Purashkar’ for his essential reporting on rural issues.
The event also included the presentation of certificates of appreciation to various IPR officials for their dedicated service. In his speech, the Chief Minister emphasized the critical role of media as a democratic pillar, lauding journalists for informing and inspiring change. He introduced the ‘Tista Rangit Aviral Kalam Award’, to be presented annually at the State Independence Day celebration, as a testament to the government’s commitment to journalistic freedom and recognition.
