Join the Fight: Unleash the Power of Hope on World Pneumonia Day with SAANS Campaign to Save Children’s Lives
On November 13, 2024, the State and District Level observance of World Pneumonia Day marked the launch of the SAANS (Social Awareness & Action to Neutralize Pneumonia Successfully) Campaign in Campbell Bay. The initiative, coordinated by the District Health Society (SA), State Health Society, and Directorate of Health Services, focuses on raising awareness about the prevention and treatment of childhood pneumonia. Running until February 28, 2025, this campaign aims to equip healthcare professionals and the public with essential knowledge and skills.
The launch event, held at the Directorate of Industries’ Conference Hall, included a comprehensive one-day training session for Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs). This training was designed to enhance their capacity to educate communities about pneumonia prevention and early detection strategies. It emphasized the need for increased awareness and appropriate care for children impacted by pneumonia.
Notable attendees included Dr. Suja Antony, Director of Health Services, Dr. Avijit Roy, Deputy Director/JS (FW), Dr. Sunil Kumar, Chief Medical Officer (S), Mr. B. Nagendra, District Programme Manager of DHS (SA), and Medical Officers from the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK). During the event, both Dr. Antony and Dr. Roy underscored the importance of the SAANS Campaign. They highlighted its goal of empowering ASHA workers and ANMs to promote awareness at the community level, stressing the need to strengthen health systems to effectively combat childhood pneumonia.
Under the slogan “Pneumonia nahi, toh bachpan sahi” (No pneumonia, a healthy childhood), the SAANS Campaign draws attention to the critical role of pneumonia prevention in ensuring a healthy childhood and fostering overall development. Dr. Shweta, Medical Officer from RBSK, called for robust community support to aid ANMs and ASHAs in the early detection and treatment of pneumonia in children under five.
The SAANS Campaign seeks to markedly reduce childhood pneumonia through public awareness, community involvement, and bolstered healthcare services, with continued public support essential for its success.
