Furious Residents Protest Against Shocking Government Closure of Revenue Circle, Vow to Boycott Panchayat Polls
Residents of Chamaria in Kamrup District, Assam staged a sit-in protest on November 12, objecting to the state government’s proposal to close the Chamaria revenue circle office. The closure is part of a larger governmental decision to shut down 36 revenue circle offices across Assam, aiming to streamline administrative services by reallocating staff to other offices within the same district.
The protesters expressed deep dissatisfaction with the state’s plan, which includes ending operations of several revenue circle offices like Bajali’s Sarupeta, Baghbar and Sarthebari in Barpeta, Dangtol and Manikpur in Bongaigaon, among many others spanning multiple districts. In the Kamrup Metropolitan district, the Chandrapur office faces closure, adding to the list of affected locations such as Dibrugarh (West), Rongjuli, Khumtai, Algapur, and more. This decision has caused considerable unease among the residents of these areas, who are worried about the potential negative impacts.
Chamaria’s residents have vowed to escalate their protest efforts and are even considering boycotting the forthcoming Panchayat elections unless the government rescinds its decision. A local resident emphasized the historical significance of the Chamaria revenue circle office, established in 1988 by the Asom Gana Parishad party to honor martyrs of the Assam movement. The move to shutter these offices is seen as contradictory to the government’s earlier promises concerning community and land rights.
The list of offices slated for closure includes regions such as Karimganj, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nalbari, Sivasagar, and South Salmara-Mankachar, showcasing the significant geographical spread of this controversial decision. As the situation evolves, affected communities remain vigilant, demanding that the government reconsider its approach to preserving these vital administrative services.
