Alarming Surge of Pre-Poll Violence in Samaguri Sparks Urgent Concerns
Pre-poll violence erupted in the Samaguri assembly constituency in Guwahati, resulting in property damage to the residence of Congress worker Osman Ali. Miscreants reportedly vandalized Ali’s house and damaged four vehicles—two personal and two hired for election purposes. Thankfully, no casualties were reported, according to Additional SP (Nagaon) Pranab Kalita.
In political developments, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, supported the BJP candidate by participating in a padayatra from Aambagan to Kawaimari in the Samaguri by-election campaign. Addressing a gathering at Singimari, Sonowal encouraged voters to support “politics of empowerment,” as opposed to “politics of appeasement.”
As election campaigns heat up, Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, took the opportunity to criticize the Congress party at a rally in Samaguri. Sarma condemned Congress for allegedly prioritizing dynasty over merit, pointing out their election of Tanzil Hussain, son of a former MLA, as evidence. In contrast, Sarma emphasized the BJP’s focus on merit-based candidate selection.
Adding to the political momentum, around 500 Islamic scholars publicly aligned with the BJP in the Samaguri constituency, throwing their support behind the party’s developmental agenda, while criticizing Congress for alleged communal discord.
This incident and political activities highlight the rising tensions and competitive dynamics of the upcoming Samaguri by-election.
