Transform Your Driving Journey: Empower Your Skills with Mandatory Road Safety Classes for Ernakulam License Applicants Starting Dec. 2!
Efforts to improve road safety and reduce annual road accident fatalities, which exceed 4,000 in Kerala, have intensified. Starting December 2, the Ernakulam Regional Transport Office (RTO) mandates all driving licence applicants to attend road safety classes, a policy delayed by the pandemic since its initial 2019 proposal by the former Transport Commissioner.
Under the guidance of the current Transport Commissioner, C.H. Nagaraju, this initiative aims to cultivate a safer driving culture. Previously, such road safety courses were obligatory only for negligent drivers or those whose licences were suspended. Now, all new applicants, as well as those seeking licence updates or endorsements, must complete these classes before taking their driving tests.
The sessions will be conducted at an educational institution in Kalamassery, covering recent changes in road safety, advancements in vehicle technology, and amendments to the Motor Vehicles Act. Additionally, the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) notes that individuals interested in refreshing their safety knowledge or those facing penalties for minor infractions are welcome to attend. Participants must present a copy of their learner’s or driving licence, a form of identification, and a mobile number registered with the MVD.
This renewed focus on road safety education underscores Kerala’s commitment to a more disciplined driving environment.
