Urgent Call for Action: Garo Students’ Union Demands Immediate Pro-VC Appointment at Tura Campus
The Garo Students’ Union (GSU) has made an urgent appeal to Professor Prabha Shankar Shukla, the Vice-Chancellor of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), to appoint a Pro Vice-Chancellor (Pro-VC) at the Tura campus. The union emphasized that the position has remained vacant since September 2021, hindering the campus’s administrative functions and financial operations. With many qualified professors available, the GSU argued, filling this position should not pose a challenge.
Moreover, the GSU underscored the necessity of immediately conducting the PGSU elections to establish an official student body to convey student grievances. The previous PGSU was dissolved without proper consultation, which the union suggests might have been due to an argument between an official and the former PGSU President. The GSU questioned the legitimacy of this dissolution, pointing out that the campus director does not possess the authority to permanently disband the union.
The financial implications also raised eyebrows. Despite the union’s apparent dissolution, an annual budget of Rs. 12 lakhs continues to be allocated for the PGSU. The GSU demanded transparency regarding who controls these funds and stressed that such finances should not be utilized by NEHU faculty, indicating potential mismanagement.
The GSU is calling for clear answers from the university administration to resolve these issues, advocating for a reinstated and functional student union and a competent Pro-VC to enhance the campus’s operational efficacy. Through these measures, the GSU seeks to bridge the communication gap between students and the NEHU administration, ultimately facilitating a more supportive educational environment.
