Urgent Outcry: Protesters in Bangladesh Demand Justice and Protection for Endangered Hindus and Minorities Amid Escalating Attacks
Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Dhaka on November 2, rallying for enhanced protection for Hindus and other minority groups who have experienced growing violence since the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The protest reflects increasing fears among minorities who feel vulnerable after Hasina’s exit amid a student-led uprising in August.
Under the leadership of Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, the caretaker government has condemned these attacks, attributing many incidents more to political motives than religious antagonism. This perspective frustrates minority leaders like Hindu civic leader Charu Chandra Das Brahmachari, who criticized the government’s failure to grasp the true impact on minorities, citing incidents targeting temples, homes, and businesses.
Protesters demand legislative measures to protect minorities and insist on minimum governmental representation for minority communities. Tensions further escalated following sedition charges against 19 individuals from a minority rights rally in Chittagong. These individuals supposedly disrespected the national flag, a claim they argue is politically biased. Protester Chiranjan Goswami remarked that such accusations intensify distrust toward the government.
Hindus, comprising nearly 8% of Bangladesh’s population, have faced targeted attacks, as have Sufi shrines, reportedly by Islamist factions aiming to quash diverse Islamic practices. The Dhaka protest trails a significant demonstration in Chittagong, where about 10,000 people advocated for minority protections, with leaders committing to ongoing protests until their safety is assured.
Former Prime Minister Hasina fled to India amid August’s mass protests, ending her 15-year tenure marred by allegations of human rights abuses. As Bangladesh undergoes leadership transition, the demands for minority justice and protection pose a critical challenge for the interim government. Activists call for urgent and decisive measures to secure minority rights, stressing the need for substantial action in this transitional period.
