Unveiling the Untold Story of Bachman-Turner Overdrive’s ‘Takin’ Care of Business’: An Emotional Journey with Randy Bachman
Randy Bachman, the Canadian guitarist known for his role in both the Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO), created a classic rock anthem with “Takin’ Care of Business.” Reflecting on the song’s genesis, Bachman describes it as his divine gift—a notion tempered by the patience and resilience required in its crafting. The song’s origins trace back to his time with the Guess Who, where in 1967, inspired by a colleague’s daily ritual, he began to compose the tune at New York’s Scepter Studios.
Initially titled “White Collar Worker,” the song featured verses reminiscent of the Beatles’ “Paperback Writer,” but its chorus was a stumbling block. Burton Cummings, Bachman’s bandmate in the Guess Who, rejected it, quipping that its chorus lacked appeal. The project was shelved, only to be revived after Bachman’s departure from the Guess Who and the formation of BTO.
The breakthrough came inadvertently, inspired by a DJ’s catchphrase, “takin’ care of business,” during a gig where Bachman had to lead with an ailing bandmate. Daring improvisation turned “White Collar Worker” into “Takin’ Care of Business,” giving it the edge it was missing. The band soon recorded it with Bachman at the helm, and the song was released in January 1974. It resonated deeply with audiences, climbing to number 12 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and solidifying its place in rock history.
Despite BTO disbanding in 1980, they have reunited multiple times, with the latest lineup featuring Bachman’s son, Tal. Today, “Takin’ Care of Business” endures as a resilient rock staple, appearing in various media forms and becoming emblematic of the working spirit. For Bachman, it’s a testament to years of dedication, a timeless piece that echoes his remarkable journey in music.
