Empowering the Future: Why the Inspiring Naga Cultural Reinvention Must Keep Flourishing
Dr. Visier Meyasetsu Sanyü delivered an impactful lecture at the Tetso College in Chümoukedima on November 1, addressing the theme “Reconstructing Naga History from Oral Tradition” during the inaugural Dr. PS Lorin Annual Impact Lecture. Sanyü, a prominent figure in the Naga community, being a core member of the Forum for Naga Reconciliation, advisor to the Naga Global Forum, and President of the Peace Initiative in North-East India, emphasized the significance of preserving Naga oral traditions to prevent cultural oblivion.
In his address, Sanyü lamented the loss of traditional narratives and urged for the accurate and unbiased reconstruction of Naga history from oral sources. He stressed that this cultural reinvention is vital for maintaining the community’s identity. Drawing parallels from Belgian historian Jan Vansina, Sanyü highlighted the role of oral traditions in societal evolution and advocated for their inclusion in formal education.
Sanyü expressed concerns over cultural commodification, using the Hornbill Festival as an example of how cultural displays risk becoming mere performances rather than true reflections of Naga heritage. He also critiqued the impact of colonialism and Christianity on Naga culture, noting how colonial biases altered traditional practices and self-perception.
Despite these changes, Sanyü observed a meaningful cultural rebirth within Christian communities. He attended the Sekrenyi festival organized by a church, witnessing its evolution from its traditional form to a new Christian version. While this transformation brought both joy and sadness, it also represented an opportunity for cultural renewal.
Sanyü concluded by underscoring the challenge of merging the best aspects of traditional and modern cultures, particularly in a society now predominantly Christian. His insightful lecture calls for a harmonious blend of past and present to ensure the vibrant continuity of Naga cultural identity.
