Urgent Alert: Indians in Bangladesh Urged to Stay Safe and Avoid Travel Amid Escalating Student Protests
NATIONAL News Alert: Indian Embassy Issues Advisory Amid Violent Student Protests in Bangladesh
Dhaka, July 18:
Amid escalating student protests in Bangladesh, the Indian Embassy has advised Indian nationals and students in the country to minimize outdoor movements. The advisory follows violent demonstrations that have resulted in at least six fatalities, including the death of a child, due to clashes between anti-quota protestors and security forces.
The advisory, issued on Thursday, emphasized avoiding travel and restricting movement outside residences. A 24-hour emergency helpline has been set up, and Indian nationals have been urged to contact the High Commission in Dhaka or Assistant High Commissions for any assistance.
Protests have erupted across Bangladesh as students demand the removal of a 30 percent reservation quota for families of veterans from the 1971 Independence War. The quota system, which had been scrapped in 2018, was reintroduced by a court ruling in June, sparking widespread unrest.
Local reports indicate that fires and acts of vandalism have been rampant, with protestors setting ablaze tires, wooden logs, motorcycles, and toll booths. The most severe clashes have been reported in Dhaka’s Shonir Akhra area.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina addressed the nation on Wednesday, expressing sorrow over the violence and urging patience. She highlighted that the government has appealed against the court’s verdict to the apex court, with a hearing date scheduled in the Appellate Division.
"It is a matter of sorrow that some vested quarters started making different kinds of statements and engaged in terrorist activities to gain their ambitious intentions centring on this movement. As the matter has been brought before the top court, I call upon all to keep patience," stated Prime Minister Hasina.
The advisory comes as Bangladesh observes a complete shutdown, further reflecting the intense unrest gripping the nation.
