Empowering Unity: WC-NNPGs Reflect on Agreed Position – Unveil Key Aspects
DIMAPUR, October 30 (MExN): Marking five years since the success of the Indo-Naga Peace talks, the Working Committee of the Naga National Political Groups (WC-NNPGs) extended heartfelt congratulations to the Naga community. The committee reflected on joining the negotiations with the Government of India (GoI), emphasizing that the initial talks were influenced by previous undisclosed agreements with NSCN (IM). Despite GoI’s earlier focus on concluding negotiations swiftly, the complex analysis of the political landscape added depth to the discussions. This culminated in a standing agreement reached on November 17, 2017, which respects the Naga people’s historical and political rights, allowing them to determine their future identity.
The Agreed Position is recognized as an intergovernmental agreement, signed by WC-NNPGs and RN Ravi, the GoI’s Cabinet-level Interlocutor. It delineates legislative powers between India and Nagaland, establishing Nagaland as a separate geopolitical entity with a bicameral legislature. The Upper House, the Nagaland Federal Hoho, will reflect traditional Naga customs, empowering them to legislate on issues related to customs, land, and natural resources.
The political solution acknowledges Naga identity further, ensuring their representation with a separate page in Indian passports and participation in all international events. Enhanced representation in Indian Parliament is also secured, increasing the strength of the Leacy Hoho from 60 to 80 legislators. Anticipated reforms under this agreement include a novel fiscal and economic system addressing past disparities, particularly in infrastructure, within a three-year transitional period. Plans emphasize health, education, technology, and communication to propel Nagaland to national prominence.
Additionally, the anticipated settlement envisions village systems transforming into self-reliant local governments and fostering a business-friendly environment. As the WC-NNPGs look towards the agreement’s finalization by 2024, they hope for active involvement in India’s 2047 vision under the Prime Minister’s leadership.
