Phenomenal 81% Drop in Child Marriages Brings Hope to Assam: ICP Report – Northeast News
Assam’s Anti-Child Marriage Campaign Yields Remarkable Results
The Assam government’s initiative to eradicate child marriages has demonstrated significant success across the state. According to the India Child Protection (ICP) report titled “Towards Justice: Ending Child Marriage,” there has been an impressive 81% reduction in child marriage cases between 2021-22 and 2023-24 in 20 districts of Assam.
Released on World Day for International Justice, the ICP’s findings are based on data from the National Crime Bureau Records (NCRB) and surveys from 1,132 villages. Notably, the districts of Jorhat and Nagaon have completely eradicated child marriages. Additionally, 30% of the villages surveyed reported complete eradication, while 40% showed a substantial decrease in child marriage instances.
The report highlights that over 90% of respondents attributed the reduction to strict governmental measures, which included arrests and the filing of FIRs. Nearly 98% of Assamese residents believe that prosecuting offenders is crucial for ending the practice. This consensus underscores the effectiveness of the state’s zero-tolerance policy toward child marriage.
Taking to social media, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the report and emphasized the government’s commitment to fighting this social evil. "This exceptional report by @IndiaCPOrg is a shining testament to our sustained efforts in empowering Nari Shakti. With over 3,000 arrests and our zero-tolerance approach, we have achieved an 81% decline in child marriages since 2021. We will not rest until we eliminate this social evil," he wrote.
The Assam CM has pledged to eradicate child marriage in the state by 2026. The findings of the ICP report showcase Assam as a leading example for the rest of the country in combating child marriage, emphasizing the importance of continued efforts and vigilance.
This report underscores the crucial role of governmental action and community support in achieving significant social change, paving the way for a future free from child marriage in Assam.
