Railway Police Boosts Safety Amid Diwali Travel Rush: Experience Worry-Free Journeys!
As India prepares for the vibrant festivities of Diwali and Chhath Puja, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) is stepping up to ensure the safety of millions of rail passengers navigating the bustling network during this peak travel season. Anticipating a surge in traveler numbers, the RPF has launched an extensive safety initiative aimed at providing a secure, incident-free journey.
Beginning October 15, 2024, the RPF implemented several preventive measures to address fire risks and potential hazards. The initiative involves enhanced monitoring of luggage and thorough inspections of parcels, along with curbing unsafe practices like using portable stoves by vendors. To engage and inform the public, the RPF has been distributing informative leaflets, displaying safety posters, organizing street plays (Nukkad Nataks), and leveraging social, print, and electronic media outlets.
The campaign has already resulted in 56 bookings under the Railway Act for possession of dangerous, inflammable items. Additionally, 550 passengers have been penalized for smoking in trains, and 2,414 individuals held accountable under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), highlighting the RPF’s commitment to enforcing railway safety regulations.
Passengers are urged to follow the RPF’s safety guidelines: promptly reporting sightings of firecrackers, suspicious items, or activities; securing valuables and minimizing baggage; opting for digital transactions; ensuring that children are supervised; and paying heed to station announcements and instructions from railway staff.
Key security measures include increased CCTV surveillance at major railway stations, heightened patrolling by RPF personnel on trains and platforms, rigorous checks on luggage and passenger belongings, and close collaboration with the Government Railway Police (GRP) to bolster crime prevention. For any safety concerns, travelers can contact the RPF through the Rail Madad portal, the mobile application, or the helpline number 139.
“Diwali and Chhath Puja symbolize joy and unity, and ensuring passenger safety is our top priority,” said Manoj Yadav, Director General of the RPF. He urged travelers to stay vigilant and cooperate with personnel to ensure a safe festive journey for everyone.
