Urgent Appeal: Assam CM Seeks West Bengal’s Bold Collaboration to Safeguard Against Threats Amid Bangladesh Turmoil | Guwahati News
In a recent press conference, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma underscored the critical need for states bordering Bangladesh to collaborate with the Border Security Force (BSF) to prevent infiltration, especially amid the ongoing political unrest in Bangladesh. Sarma noted that Assam and Tripura are already working closely with the BSF, but emphasized the importance of West Bengal’s participation in identifying infiltrators. He warned that without West Bengal’s involvement, individuals turned away from Assam and Tripura might re-enter through West Bengal.
Sarma highlighted the daily apprehension of foreigners in Assam over the past two months and acknowledged the challenges posed by the porous border. Despite the BSF’s efforts, some infiltrators have managed to enter India, as evidenced by recent arrests of illegal migrants who returned to Bangladesh to bring more individuals. The Assam police, through independent and joint operations with the BSF, have identified and repatriated 138 infiltrators within the last two months.
Rejecting the notion that Hindu-Bengalis are responsible for such infiltration, Sarma clarified that it is primarily the Rohingyas attempting to cross into India. He stressed the ongoing vigilance required from state governments and the necessity of close cooperation with the BSF to tackle this issue effectively. Sarma concluded by emphasizing that the goal is to push back anyone who enters illegally, irrespective of their religion, aiming for a coordinated effort across the northeastern states.
This call for cooperation forms part of a broader narrative wherein the BSF has increased its security presence along the India-Bangladesh border, especially in riverine areas, in light of the current situation in Bangladesh. The tightening of security aligns with efforts to prevent infiltration and maintain border integrity, reflecting growing concerns over cross-border movements and their implications for regional security.
