Shocking Bust: Assam Police Heroically Seize 350 Quintals of Burmese Areca Nuts, Apprehend 2 Culprits
Guwahati: The Special Task Force (STF) of Assam Police has intercepted a major illegal transportation of Burmese areca nuts intended for Madhya Pradesh. Acting on intelligence inputs, the STF stopped a truck, registered as UP82-AT-9208, in the Bagori area of Nagaon district. This vehicle was traveling from Dimapur, Nagaland, and was set to pass through Golaghat district in Assam.
Upon a thorough search, authorities discovered 350 quintals of Burmese areca nuts being transported without legitimate documentation. Consequently, the STF seized both the truck and its illegal cargo, and detained the driver and his assistant, who own the vehicle. The confiscated items and individuals were transferred to Bagori police for further investigation.
The smuggling of areca nuts, commonly known as betel nuts, from Myanmar into India is a prevalent issue, facilitated by the porous borders in the Northeastern states of Manipur and Mizoram. Once smuggled into India, these nuts are typically distributed across the country via routes through Nagaland and Assam, despite their known harmful effects.
In response to rising concerns, a high-level investigation into areca nut smuggling from neighboring countries was launched in 2021. Yet, despite these efforts, the illegal trade continues to thrive unabated across Northeast India’s borders with Myanmar.
