Sikkim Officials Triumphantly Unite with Bhutan in Groundbreaking High-Altitude Tiger Conservation Effort
A five-member delegation from Sikkim, led by Dr. Pradeep Kumar, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Secretary of the Forest and Environment Department, participated in a crucial transboundary coordination meeting on tiger conservation held in Bhutan from October 23 to 24. This pivotal gathering included representatives from India, Bhutan, and Nepal, focusing on the preservation of tigers across the Himalayan region.
Central to the discussions were the challenges of safeguarding high-altitude tigers, a topic that gained prominence following recent camera trap data that confirmed tiger movements between Sikkim and Bhutan. Dr. Rajesh Gopal, Secretary General of the Global Tiger Forum, underscored the essential need for cross-border collaboration, as tiger habitats seamlessly span Nepal, Bhutan, and India, requiring unified conservation strategies.
The Sikkim delegation took the opportunity to showcase its innovative conservation initiatives, notably the “Mero Rukh Mero Santati” program, and emphasized its recognition as the “Green State of India.” These initiatives were highlighted as significant contributions to the collective efforts in tiger preservation.
In addition to the discussions, the Sikkim team visited the Jigme Khesar Strict Nature Reserve in Bhutan, where they observed successful conservation practices in action. This visit allowed for the exchange of valuable insights and strategies that could be implemented back in Sikkim to enhance local conservation efforts.
The meeting represented an essential step towards improved coordination and shared strategies among the three countries, acknowledging the interconnected nature of tiger habitats in the Himalayan region. It underscored the urgency of collaborative action to ensure the survival of these majestic creatures and the preservation of their unique high-altitude ecosystems. Through such engagements, regional stakeholders continue to foster strong partnerships crucial for the ongoing success of transboundary tiger conservation efforts.
