Exciting Breakthrough: NEHU and Indo-Korean Centre Unite to Offer Korean Language Courses in Meghalaya by July 2025
North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Shillong announced the introduction of Korean language courses slated for July 2025, representing a significant expansion of its linguistics program. This initiative arises from a newly established partnership with the Indo-Korean Business Culture Centre (IKBCC) of South Korea.
Formally cemented through a memorandum of understanding signed on October 22 at NEHU’s Golden Jubilee Auditorium, the collaboration aims to foster international internships and career opportunities for students from both India and South Korea. NEHU’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Shukla, emphasized the partnership’s role in enhancing India-Korea relations, offering students a window into East Asian culture through cultural exchanges and potential employment avenues.
The Department of Linguistics will spearhead the Korean language training and certification, with the program coordinated by Prof. Streamlet Dkhar as the Academic Coordinator and Dr. Saralin A. Lyngdoh as the Course Coordinator. A pivotal element of this partnership is the creation of a multilingual Khasi-Hindi-Korean-English dictionary, underlining the commitment to broader linguistic and cultural collaboration.
Moreover, the agreement includes plans for faculty exchanges that will facilitate Korean institutions offering Khasi and Hindi language courses. This is anticipated to further enrich cross-cultural understanding and academic collaboration.
IKBCC’s Founder Director, Dr. Zena Chung, engaged with NEHU faculty and students after the ceremony to discuss aspects of Korean culture and the opportunities stemming from the partnership. The memorandum was signed by Col. Omkar Singh representing NEHU, and Dr. Chung for IKBCC, in the presence of senior university officials, including IIM Shillong Director, Prof. PK Goyal.
This collaboration not only promises to broaden educational horizons for NEHU students but also signifies a strengthening of the academic and cultural ties between India and South Korea.
