Legendary Hockey Icon Rani Rampal Bids Emotional Farewell: A Heartfelt Retirement Announcement
Former Indian women’s hockey team captain, Rani Rampal, has announced her retirement, concluding an illustrious 16-year career that has been nothing short of inspiring. Known for her perseverance and talent, Rani rose from humble beginnings in a small town in Haryana, where her father, a cart-puller, supported her ambition amidst poverty and societal conservatisms. At just 29, Rani leaves behind a legacy as one of India’s most celebrated hockey players, having led the national team to a historic fourth-place Olympic finish at the Tokyo 2021 Games.
Reflecting on her journey, Rani expressed gratitude and surprise at her long tenure representing her country. Her remarkable career is marked by her determination to transcend her challenging childhood circumstances, focusing firmly on her goal of representing India on the international stage. Hockey India has honored her contributions by retiring her jersey number 28 and awarding her Rs 10 lakh.
Rani made her international debut in 2008 as a 14-year-old at the Olympic qualifiers, showcasing her prowess by netting 205 goals in 254 matches for India. Her efforts were acknowledged with the prestigious Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award and Padma Shri in 2020. Transitioning off the field, Rani has taken on the role of national coach for sub-junior women players and joined Soorma Hockey Club as the mentor for its women’s team in the revamped Hockey India League.
Hailing from Shahabad, a renowned hub for Indian hockey, Rani’s journey to the top was fraught with challenges. Her father’s minimal wages didn’t deter her, even when initially deemed too malnourished to play by a district coach. Her tenacity saw her rise from playing with a broken stick in a field to becoming the youngest player to represent India at 14. Under her leadership, the team reached the quarterfinals of the 2018 World Cup, won silver at the 2018 Asian Games, and won the 2019 FIH Series Finals. Her singular unfulfilled dream remains an Olympic podium finish.
