Shocking Uproar: Kalyan Banerjee Suspended from JPC After Heated Clash with BJP’s Abhijit Ganguly Turns Violent
Last updated on October 22, 2024, at 17:42 IST by Deputy News Editor Vani Mehrotra, an incident involving Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee caught attention after he injured himself by breaking a glass bottle during a heated exchange with former Calcutta High Court judge and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Abhijit Ganguly. This altercation occurred at a meeting of the Joint Committee on the Waqf Bill, leading to Banerjee injuring his thumb and index finger and requiring four stitches.
In response to his actions, Banerjee faced a suspension from the Lok Sabha for one day and two sittings, following a motion spearheaded by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey. The vote resulted in nine in favor of his suspension and eight against. The committee was chaired by BJP’s Jagdambika Pal, and the incident highlighted ongoing tensions during discussions where opposition members questioned the stakeholders’ relevance to the Waqf Bill.
The altercation, which led to Banerjee’s attempt to throw the broken bottle toward the chairman’s desk, was criticized by BJP leader Agnimitra Paul, who labeled such behavior as disgraceful, especially coming from a sitting MP. Paul expressed concerns over the implications for law and order in West Bengal under Mamata Banerjee’s leadership, criticizing the culture of impunity among lawmakers.
A video shared by PTI showed Banerjee being assisted back to the meeting room by AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi and AAP leader Sanjay Singh, illustrating the tension and severity of the incident. The actions of Kalyan Banerjee during this episode have sparked discussions over the conduct expected of public officials.
