UP Govt Holds Back on Demolitions Amid Supreme Court Review: Unveiling the Tense Bahraich Violence
The Uttar Pradesh government has assured the Supreme Court that it will refrain from executing demolition orders on certain buildings tied to individuals allegedly involved in the October 13 Bahraich violence until Wednesday, as reported by ANI. The Supreme Court is set to hear a plea from three accused individuals challenging such demolition notices, as per PTI. Senior advocate C U Singh urged an urgent hearing, presenting the case to Justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan, citing the state’s brief three-day response window to the notices. He noted that petitioners’ family members had surrendered, and the demolition notices were dated October 17 and posted a day later. Additional Solicitor General K M Nataraj, representing the state, informed that the Allahabad High Court is addressing the issue, granting 15 days for responses.
The Supreme Court reiterated that no actions should be taken until Wednesday, after the petitioner’s counsel mentioned a lack of protection from the high court. Concurrently, UP Police have registered another FIR related to the recent Mahrajganj communal unrest, naming seven individuals, including a BJYM office bearer, following BJP MLA Sureshwar Singh’s complaint. This becomes the 12th FIR linked to the disturbance, which escalated after 22-year-old Ram Gopal Mishra was fatally shot amid a dispute over loud music during a Durga idol immersion, triggering violence, arson, and a four-day internet shutdown. The conflict, spurred by an inter-faith clash over music outside a worship place, led to significant unrest in the area.
This developing case underscores the delicate communal tensions in the region, with judicial actions and local security measures continually unfolding.
