Empowering Unity: PM Modi Hails BRICS Expansion for Global Progress and Inclusivity
On October 22, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the enhanced inclusivity and global impact of BRICS following its expansion with new members last year. Departing for a two-day visit to Kazan, Russia, Modi emphasized India’s commitment to the BRICS framework and expressed eagerness for comprehensive discussions at the 16th BRICS Summit. The Prime Minister shared his itinerary via a post on X, underscoring the importance of engaging with various leaders.
Prime Minister Modi’s visit comes at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin. In his departure statement, Modi reiterated India’s dedication to BRICS as a critical forum for addressing global developmental issues. Key topics include reformed multilateralism, climate change, economic collaboration, resilient supply chains, and cultural exchanges. The visit aims to bolster the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia, following the annual summit in July 2024 in Moscow.
This summit marks the first since BRICS’ expansion to nine members, welcoming Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, and the UAE after their invitation at the 2023 summit in South Africa. With the theme “Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security,” the event offers a vital platform for world leaders to deliberate on pressing global concerns, according to India’s Ministry of External Affairs.
During his stay in Kazan, PM Modi plans bilateral discussions with leaders from BRICS nations and invited guests. Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov described the summit as the largest foreign policy event in Russia, hosting leaders from 24 countries and delegations from 32 nations. Activities include meetings in the BRICS+ framework under the theme “BRICS and the Global South: Building the Future of the World Together,” featuring Asian, African, Middle Eastern, and Latin American participants. Notable attendees include UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and leaders from Turkey, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and more, underscoring BRICS’ expanding influence on the global stage.
