Breaking: Empowered WNBA Players Union Boldly Opt Out of Current CBA for a Fairer Future
Jonquel Jones of the New York Liberty, celebrated as the 2024 WNBA Finals MVP, after the team triumphed over the Minnesota Lynx in an intense Game Five showdown in Brooklyn, New York. On the bargaining front, the WNBA players union has opted to exit the existing collective bargaining agreement, two years shy of its expiration. This decision, made ahead of the November 1 deadline, heralds a pivotal moment for the league.
Following a landmark 11-year media rights agreement valued at $200 million annually, the WNBA has experienced unprecedented growth. The successful 2024 season, marked by record attendance and viewership, culminated in a nail-biting WNBA Finals. WNBPA President Nneka Ogwumike emphasized the need for change, stating, “The world has evolved since 2020, and we cannot afford to stand still. This is a new era, and we are ready to lead transformational change.”
As WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert highlighted, the league is poised for continued prosperity, evidenced by increased media exposure and corporate partnerships. Players are also receiving more marketing opportunities, enhancing their visibility. The current CBA remains effective for the 2025 season, providing a window to negotiate a new agreement.
The players union seeks a revised economic model that better reflects the league’s burgeoning business success, advocating for an equity-based system over the current caps on player value and benefits. Additional priorities include improvements in salaries, retirement packages, and family-related benefits. WNBPA Vice President Kelsey Plum underscored, “This isn’t a sudden wake-up call. It’s the culmination of what we’ve been driving for over the last several seasons. We’ve played a key role in the league’s historic growth and now we’re breaking free from the current system to demand full transparency and an equitable stake in the business we’ve helped build.”
As the league reflects on its historic 2024 season, negotiations on a new CBA aim to secure a fair and prosperous future.
