Cubans Endure Heart-Wrenching Power Outage Amidst Looming Tropical Storm Threat
HAVANA (AP) — Cuba is grappling with its worst power outage since Hurricane Ian in 2022, as a massive blackout grips the nation for a fourth night. This energy crisis has sparked small protests and has seen the government warn against any unrest. The blackout began Thursday, following energy issues that have ignited protests in 2021, 2022, and earlier in 2024. President Miguel Díaz-Canel has vowed strict measures against any disturbances.
The crisis has been exacerbated by Hurricane Oscar, which hit the island’s eastern coast, causing further instability in key power stations in Holguín and Santiago de Cuba. While the storm weakened to a tropical storm, its impact is still felt across the island, adding to the woes of the 2 million residents of Havana, half of whom face intermittent power supply.
Many in Havana are cooking on makeshift wood stoves, with long lines forming for bread at the few functional bakeries. The authorities have imposed emergency measures, suspending schools and nonessential services to manage electricity demand. The island’s energy minister disclosed that international allies like Mexico and Venezuela have offered assistance, but the challenges persist due to the breakdown of outdated power plants and fuel shortages. As attempts to fix the grid continue, a resolution remains elusive.
