Unleashing Light: Freedom Illuminates Guwahati’s Main Roads, Yet Lanes Remain Shrouded in Darkness
In Guwahati, the aftermath of Durga Puja celebrations has left residents puzzled over the lingering decorative lights on GS Road, which some say resemble those used during Independence Day. This has led to confusion because many city streets remain shrouded in darkness due to non-functional streetlights.
Residents like Gaurav Kumar Singh from Ulubari expressed bewilderment at the odd timing and theme of the decorations, highlighting the irony of bright festive lights coexisting with non-operational street lighting. Singh emphasized the basic need for functional streetlights, which are crucial for safety and convenience in urban areas.
Daily commuter Kakoli Das voiced her frustration over what she perceives as misplaced priorities, pointing out the stark contrast between main roads lit by decorative lights and residential lanes left in darkness. “The focus should be on fixing broken streetlights rather than spending resources on decorations,” she argued, underscoring the critical need for safer, well-lit streets.
Similarly, street vendor Sangeeta Hazarika from Lachit Nagar echoed these concerns, questioning the city authorities’ focus on aesthetics over practicality. While acknowledging the beauty of the decorations, Hazarika stressed the necessity of addressing neglected infrastructure.
As decorative lights continue to illuminate GS Road, they have become a focal point for residents demanding action on basic municipal services. The community’s growing frustration reflects a broader call for re-evaluation of the city’s priorities, pressing officials to address these fundamental issues that impact daily life in Guwahati.
