Relief and Victory: West Bengal Junior Doctors Triumphantly End Hunger Strike After Empowering Talks with CM Mamata Banerjee
Junior doctors in West Bengal have ended their 17-day hunger strike following a meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the state secretariat, Nabanna. The strike, initiated on October 5, was a response to the alleged rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Hospital in August, an incident that sparked widespread outrage and demands for systemic reforms to ensure safety within healthcare institutions.
During the nearly two-hour discussion, streamed live, the junior doctors laid out their primary concerns, including the removal of state health secretary Narayan Nigam and the eradication of a prevailing “threat culture” in hospitals. Although Banerjee did not agree to dismiss Nigam, she committed to addressing several of their highlighted issues. She assured the doctors that significant steps had already been taken and urged them to consider their health and patient needs versus continuing the hunger strike.
Despite some assurances, the doctors remain disappointed with the slow progress on creating a safer environment for female medical staff. Kinjal Nanda, representing the protesters, noted ongoing reports of toxic workplaces and sexual harassment over the last three years, with no substantial action undertaken to address these claims.
The strike followed a ‘cease-work’ movement that began on August 9, demanding healthcare infrastructure reforms, medical college elections, and the reinstatement of suspended doctors. Banerjee acknowledged systemic issues but also reminded the doctors that not all demands could be fulfilled all at once, emphasizing the government’s discretion in evaluating their legitimacy.
As the hunger strike concluded, six doctors had been hospitalized due to health complications from fasting. The Chief Minister’s direct appeal and assurance led to the resumption of their duties, though the doctors pledged to continue their push for systemic healthcare reforms.
In related news, a journalist in Guwahati, Assam, was found dead in a suspected suicide at a rented apartment.
