Thrilling Tribute: Arunachal Celebrates the 62nd Walong Day with an Inspiring Cycling Expedition from Namsai to Namti
In a moving tribute to the soldiers of the 1962 Walong War, Arunachal Pradesh’s Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein inaugurated the DAO Cycling Expedition. The event, commencing at the Golden Pagoda in Namsai and proceeding to Namti, was organized by the Indian Army’s 181 Mountain Brigade to commemorate the 62nd Walong Day. The expedition featured 62 cyclists, including 12 young female participants, and involved local youth, and members from the Indian Army and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police.
The event opened with a vibrant cultural performance by the Tai Khamti and Singpho communities and a combat demonstration by the Indian Army. Deputy Chief Minister Mein praised the 181 Mountain Brigade for orchestrating a meaningful cycling journey and reiterated the state government’s solid backing. He emphasized Walong Day’s significance, lauding the bravery of Indian soldiers against Chinese forces in 1962. Reflecting on personal memories, he recalled the local community’s unwavering support to Indian troops.
“The 1962 Walong War, a pivotal moment in history, highlighted our soldiers’ unmatched bravery and resilience. We honor their sacrifices and the patriotism that unifies Arunachal Pradesh,” Mein affirmed. He highlighted the diverse tribes’ shared spirit of patriotism and commended the participating girl cyclists, encouraging youth engagement in sports for overall well-being.
Mein expressed aspirations for the cycling event’s evolution into an international spectacle to foster wider participation. The expedition, a testament to Arunachal Pradesh’s unity and strength, also celebrated community service with honors distributed to individuals for notable contributions.
Prominent attendees included Minister of Education and Tourism P.D. Sona, Minister of Women and Child Development Dasanglu Pul, MLAs Mopi Mihu, Puinnyo Apum, Chau Zingnu Namchoom, and top military and administrative officials. This cycling event not only remembered the 1962 war heroes but also underscored the enduring spirit and unity of Arunachal Pradesh.
