The Northeast Team Chess Championship 2024 commenced on October 20 at Janata Bhawan in Gangtok, marking a significant event in the region’s sports calendar. The opening ceremony saw the presence of Raju Basnet, the Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs, who attended as the chief guest. The event was orchestrated by the Sikkim Chess Association and was graced by notable figures such as Kuber Bhandari, President of Sikkim Olympic Association, Dr. RB Biswakarma, Additional Director of Sports and Youth Affairs, and Mahendra Dhakal, General Secretary of the Sikkim Chess Association.
During his address, Minister Basnet lauded the championship for uniting talented chess players from the Northeastern states, thereby promoting sportsmanship and regional unity. This inaugural edition of the Northeast Team Chess Championship in Sikkim features seven teams drawn from across the Northeastern states, highlighting the growing interest and talent in chess within the region. Sikkim has taken a proactive role by fielding two teams in the competition, which adopts a Round Robin League format.
